Haggar’s in Navestock Essex.
Navestock is a small village in Essex and is about 40 miles by road South East of Therfield.
Recently the study was contacted by Ellen Haggar who appeared to have an ancestral
connection to Navestock and was seeking help in researching her Haggar connections.
We did complete a tree of related Haggar’s of nearly 140, but unfortunately, we only got back
to here Great x 6 Grandparents John Haggar and Ann Reynolds, we believe the connection to
Navestock started with their son William who we find in the 1641 and 1851 census for
Navestock. In the 1851 census William is shown as not born at Navestock but Stapleford in
Essex in about 1783. Although we have searched, we could not find a William Haggar of
about the right age born at Stapleford but we did find one at Lambourne in 1783. The two
parishes are adjacent to each other, less than 2 miles apart so it is possible we have found
the correct parents to William. From the Census of 1841 and 1851 we have identified 2
siblings of Charles (Great x 4 Grandfather to Ellen) – John and Maria there may have been
others as there are some a few years earlier with a William as a father, but he was
Blacksmith, whereas William is shown as an Ag lab.
Ellen’s ancestors mainly had occupations associated with farming, predominately as
labourers. As some moved nearer to London they took more varied mainly in manual work.
In 1921 there were still two Haggar families in Navestock and the breadwinners were still
employed in farming.
Two of the family ended up in Australia the first was John Haggar born 1824 in Navestock the
brother of Charles (Ellen’s 4 x Great Grandfather) he was sentenced to 10 years
transportation in 1849 and in 1859 we have found his petition for release in New South Wales
but can find no further records. The other person who appears to have moved to Australia is
David J Hagger born 1934 in Chelmsford and emigrated in 1951 but we have been unable to
find further records.
